Here are some National champion jerseys
to be admired in the Tour of 2020.

Which ones to look forward to? Who will wear them and what was it like 50 years ago in 1970? What will happen when the current champions copy the performance of their predecessors from 50 years ago?

“ The show must go on”
Giacomo Nizzolo (1989) versus Franco Bitossi (1940)
Bitossi didn’t ride the Tour in 1970. Instead he rode the Giro and won the points classification. Unique about this is that he is the only rider in history to be awarded a red jersey instead of a green one!

Will Nizzolo exchange his tricolore for the green jersey or his brand new European tricot?

“Every second counts”
Luis Léon Sánchez (1983) versus José Antonio González Linares (1946)
The 1970 Tour was dominated by Eddy Merckx. He won the Tour, the polka dot jersey and came second in the points classification. But Linares was the only one to beat him in a time trial! He won the 7th stage with a difference of 3 seconds. That would mean that Sanchez will win the time trial at the Planche des Belle Filles by beating Primos Roglic of Tom Dumoulin...

That could be, after all Sanchez is a gifted time trialist,
just like Linares in the 70’s!

"I got that power”
Kasper Asgreen (1995) versus Mogens Frey Jensen (1941)
Remarkable: in 1970 there wasn’t a Danish national championship yet. However, during 1970 Denmark was represented by a strong “chefen” (patron) at the Tour de France. Mogens Frey Jensen was a success! He won the 9th stage! We predict that 50 years later Kasper will imitate him at least once. It won’t be at the ninth stage, that is a mountain stage. But the stage from ÎLE D’OLÉRON TO  ÎLE DE RÉ  WITH the wind over the flat land is for this Danish powerhouse a great opportunity!

"Belgian champion"
The Belgian national championship on the road hasn’t taken place yet. So we don’t  have an official Belgian champion. But even better, there is a time trial patron! Wout van Aert. So just like in 1970, the Belgian colours will be present at the Tour. In the end the Belgian champion Eddy Merckx did not wear the national tricolor that often. He exchanged it for the yellow jersey! Maybe WVA can copy that? They sure both know how to celebrate!
