Dwars door Vlaanderen

Today the Flandrian cycling week kicks off with the race “Dwars door Vlaanderen”. For years this was a Belgian affair. All winners came from the area. But after 19 years of domestic victories a Dutch guy broke this hegemony in 1964. It was the benjamin of a famous cycling family: Piet van Est. He watched and learned from his older brother Wim van Est, stayed on his bike during the descents and made their mama proud!
