In 1954 Amsterdam hosted the first foreign Grand Depart ever. The Tour created a lot of excitement in the then gritty Amsterdam. On July 8, the go-ahead was given in the Olympic stadium for the first stage to the Flemish Brasschaat. But not before the Dutch cyclists had completed its lap of honor in the stadium in front of a frenzied audience. A lap of honor as an appetizer! And after the finish in Brasschaat, a second lap of honor followed for the Dutch cycling team. One of them, Wout Wagtmans, was the first to cross the line!
