Excitement at the Vuelta...
and in Rwanda!

In Europe, all eyes are on the battle for the red jersey at the Vuelta. But thousands of kilometers away, young Rwandan cycling talents are dreaming of another jersey-one just as special: the national kit that would allow them to represent their country at the World Championships.

Following the first-ever World Cycling Championships on African soil, set for Kigali in 2025, Rwandan riders are eager to showcase their abilities once again. The national squad has been preparing for the World Championships during a month-long training camp that began on August 16. Expectations are particularly high for the junior categories and the mixed relay.

One of the riders hoping for selections is Brian Ishimwe. The 18-year-old lives in Kigali and has already represented Rwanda at the World Championships, competing in the junior individual time trail.

He has developed significantly since then. Kigali, situated in the "Land of a Thousand Hills", serves as his natural training ground: almost every ride involves climbing, making him stronger, fitter, and a better cyclist.

And naturally, he has a secret weapon: home-grown coffee to recover and enjoy after training.

Yet, international opportunities are not a given for young riders in Rwanda. That is why Brian is working incredibly hard to achive his dream: securing a ticket to Canada and representing Rwanda on the world stage once more.

Just how hard is he training? You can follow his progress on Strava!

The decisive moment is fast approaching. Just one week to go. Then Brian will find out if he gets to pack his bags and pull on the Rwandan Jersey again.

Will his dream become reality?
