De ronde van Vlaanderen

April 2, 2017

Today’s ‚Ronde van Vlaanderen‘ is the apotheosis of the Flemish cycling week. Time to reminisce: the race of 1985. When the peloton arrives at the famous Koppenberg it suddenly starts to rain. Cobblestones instantly turn into slippery rocks. Wheels have no grip anymore and riders are tumbling down.

Belgian champion Eric Vanderaerden had a flat tire just before the Koppenberg and is far behind. When he reaches the Koppenberg, he’s one of the few who is able to ride instead of running up the hill. He manages to catch up with the leading group. At the famous ‚Muur van Geraardsbergen‘ nobody can keep up with his pace. Eric wins Flanders‘ most appealing classic! So in the end his bad luck turns out to be good luck.

Flandrian Cycling Paradise

March 26, 2017

Another day in the Flandrian cycling paradise! “Gent Wevelgem” has all the familiar ingredients like cobblestones, wind and hordes of fans packed on hills like the Kemmelberg.

Today’s race adds another historical type of substrate. Half unpaved roads called Plugstreets, constructed 100 years ago. To remind us this paradise was once a warzone.

E3 Harelbeke Race

March 24, 2017

Today’s race E3 Harelbeke has an absolute king. But before Tom could claim this title, he had to win over “the emperor” Rik van Looy. Rik crushed everyone on the cobblestones in 1964, 1965, 1966 and 1969!

That he is still indestructible at the age of 82 has been proved. Last year he was wrongly declared dead. Even tough a minute of silence was held for him, he appeared to be safe and sound!

Dwars door Vlaanderen

March 22, 2017

Today the Flandrian cycling week kicks off with the race “Dwars door Vlaanderen”.

For years this was a Belgian affair. All winners came from the area. But after 19 years of domestic victories a Dutch guy broke this hegemony in 1964. It was the benjamin of a famous cycling family: Piet van Est. He watched and learned from his older brother Wim van Est, stayed on his bike during the descents and made their mama proud!

Roger Pingeon 1940-2017 R.I.P

The winner of the Tour de France of 1967, is no longer with us..

50 years after his victory he is now reunited with one of his opponents, he left behind on the slopes of the Mont Ventoux.
Indeed, during that tour Tom Simpson died. This tragic event overshadowed his victory and fame. Will they shake hands?

It’s “La Primavera” time!

March 18, 2017

It’s “La Primavera” time! So let’s have a coffee and drink it in memory of the legendary patron Fausto Coppi. Just like he did in 1946, during Milan-San Remo.

He was 10 minutes ahead when he slowed down at Caffe Liguri Pasticceria. The waiter took a cup of coffee from the bar and rushed out with it. He smiled, drank, and off he went again to win the race!

Paris-Nice, let’s head to the sun!

Paris-Nice, let’s head to the sun!

The first edition in 1933 had a special winner. You won’t find them like him anymore… It was Alfons Schepers the big Flemish, nicknamed “De Dikke”. Perhaps he was a little fat, he certainly was not stupid. Schepers is one of the first riders to ride with a derailleur.

It’s Strade Bianche time!

March 4, 2017

Today it will be biting dust or slog through the mud in Tuscany. It’s Strade Bianche time! Although the name suggests a rich history, the race has only existed since 2007. The finish line is in the old town of Siena. It’s obvious the first winner listened carefully to the advice from his uncle, how to climb the steep road to the fortress. Yes indeed, in 1978 the legendary Patron Francesco Moser won the Giro stage to Siena. His nephew Moreno followed his example by winning the first Strade Bianche.

The new season is about to begin

February 25, 2017

Spring is coming up and we’re coming soon… Also the new season is about to begin! Today at the Omloop het Nieuwsblad in Flanders.
In 1947 the race was won by Albert Secru. He defeated 132 riders of which only 32 made it to the finish!

His looks and pure display of power is our inspiration.
